The emphasis of this course is on the tradition and practice of documentary photography as a way of seeing and interpreting cultural life, with the goal of making original documentary art out of our own experience. This class is a combination of studio art, cultural studies, and during this semester’s version, an immersion in the traditions and practices of some aspect of ordinary life. We simultaneously consider image content, history and culture of the American South, representations of the region, and related issues of documentary work.
